Hey there, fellow aquarium enthusiasts! Today, we're diving into the delightful world of aquarium shrimp keeping. We're sharing some invaluable tips and tricks that every aquarist should know. So, grab your scuba gear and let's jump right in!

Diving into Shrimp Keeping: Essential Tips for Every Aquarist
Essential Tips for Every Aquarist

Tank Maintenance Essentials:

  • Sponge Filter Care: To clean your sponge filter, start by filling a plastic bag with some aquarium water. Avoid using tap water as the chlorine can harm beneficial bacteria. Gently squeeze the sponge inside the bag until the dirty water is expelled and the sponge feels light and fluffy.

  • Water Changes Made Easy: Water changes can be a hassle, but they're essential for maintaining a healthy aquarium. Instead of lugging around buckets, try using a submersible pump. Place the pump in your prepared water bucket, which should have the correct water parameters. Connect a hose to the pump and gently control the flow to fill your aquarium.

Caring for Delicate Shrimp:

  • Drip Acclimation: Drip acclimation is a vital technique for delicate shrimp like Suoy. To set up a drip bucket, you'll need an air tube and a small container. Connect the air tube to the container, ensuring it's submerged in the water. Gently control the drip rate by adjusting the air flow. This will gradually introduce your new shrimp to the aquarium water.

  • Beat the Heat: Heat waves can pose a serious threat to shrimp in closed aquariums. To help regulate the water temperature, consider using ice blocks or a small fan. Place the ice blocks directly in the water or near the tank to cool it down. Alternatively, a small fan can help circulate the air and prevent the water from becoming too warm.

Aquascaping Tips:

  • Secure Stem Plants: Stem plants without roots can easily become uprooted, especially when kept with fish that enjoy digging. To secure these plants, try attaching them to a sponge or small rock using cotton thread. The sponge or rock should be heavy enough to keep the plant anchored in place.

  • Stable Rock Formations: When creating intricate rock formations in your aquarium, it's crucial to ensure their stability to prevent accidents and glass damage. A reliable method involves using G1 neutral silicone or, for a stronger bond, cotton swabs impregnated with cyanoacrylate glue. However, it's important to take precautions when using cyanoacrylate glue as it releases toxic fumes during the curing process. Once cured, it forms a rock-solid bond.

By following these tips, you can create a thriving and healthy environment for your shrimp. Happy shrimp keeping!
